about

'Wake Up & Sing' is the third album by Portland family performer Red Yarn, aka Andy Furgeson. Recorded with GRAMMY-winning producer Dean Jones, the album is an homage to Furgeson's favorite old children's records and songbooks. Red Yarn emerges from the Deep Woods - the weird and dark animal world he explored with his first two albums - to sing sunnier songs about waking up, childhood play, animal adventures, and parenting.

In March 2015, Furgeson took a pilgrimage to the Hudson River Valley to see the environments that inspired some of his musical heroes, from Pete Seeger's Clearwater to the Band's Big Pink house in Woodstock. Furgeson spent two days at Jones' No Parking Studio, intending to record a six-song EP. Jones coaxed out 12 songs, as Furgeson dug deep into his notebooks of folksong adaptations and rhymes he'd written for his infant son. Over the course of the next year, Furgeson and Jones bounced tracks back and forth from coast to coast, eventually crafting 11 of them into a full-length album.

'Wake Up & Sing' refines the lush and lively folk-rock sound Red Yarn established with his two Deep Woods albums. His rootsy vocals, driving guitar and banjo work, and tight harmonies with his wife Jessie Eller-Isaacs are still on display, but reframed within Jones' strange and whimsical sonic palette. The sound is rounded out by Jones' drumming, Jed Greenberg's bass and fiddle, as well as guest appearances by GRAMMY nominee Morgan Taylor of Gustafer Yellowgold, Portland kindie mainstay Mo Phillips, and Jane Scarpantoni on cello (REM, Lou Reed, Bruce Springsteen). Furgeson's longtime collaborator Ryan Bruce created bright linocut prints for the album artwork, echoing the simple designs of old Folkways records by Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie.

Track Name: Beautiful Day
The sun has come up
The rooster has crowed
And I’m wide awake
From my head to my toes

My friends are all here
We’re ready to play
Good morning to you
It’s a beautiful day

Good morning getting better
Just get up and see
A good morning to be together
To be you and to be me

Good morning getting better
So wake up and sing
A good morning, we’re together
What more could life bring?
Track Name: Wake Up
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Wake up and face the rising sun
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Open eyes, open eyes, open eyes, open eyes
Open eyes, open eyes, open eyes, open eyes
Open eyes and take in the world outside
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Stretch arms, stretch arms, stretch arms, stretch arms
Stretch arms and hands and feet and arms
Stretch arms and stretch out your big heart
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Get up, get up, get up, get up
Get up, get ready, yeah, get on up
Get up and fill up your big cup
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Set out, set out, set out, set out
Set out, reach out, get out, set out
Set out and greet the rising crowd
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Sing loud, sing loud, sing loud, sing loud
Sing loud, yes, let your voice ring out
Sing loud and make your mama proud
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up

Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Open eyes, stretch arms and get on up
Set out and let your voice ring loud
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Track Name: I Had a Rooster
I had a rooster and the rooster pleased me
I fed my rooster on a greenberry tree
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”

I had a cat and the cat pleased me
I fed my cat on a greenberry tree
The little kitty went, “Meow, meow”
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”

I had a dog and the dog pleased me
I fed my dog on a greenberry tree
The little doggie went, “Roof, roof, roof”
The little kitty went, “Meow, meow”
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”

I had a goose and the goose pleased me
I fed my goose on a greenberry tree
The little goosey went, “Honk, honk, honk”
The little doggie went, “Roof, roof, roof”
The little kitty went, “Meow, meow”
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”

I had a horse and the horse pleased me
I fed my horse on a greenberry tree
The little horsey went, “Neigh, neigh”

The little doggie went, “Roof, roof, roof”
The little kitty went, “Meow, meow”
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”

I had a monster and the monster scared me
So I fed my monster the greenberry tree
The little monster went, “Roar! Roar!”
The little horsey went, “Neigh, neigh”
The little goosey went, “Honk, honk, honk”
The little doggie went, “Roof, roof, roof”
The little kitty went, “Meow, meow”
The little rooster went, “Cock-a-lee-doodly
Doodly, doodly, doodly, do”
Track Name: Clap Your Hands
Clap, clap, clap your hands
Clap your hands together
Clap, clap, clap your hands
Clap your hands together

Stomp, stomp, stomp and stamp
Stomp and stamp together
Stomp, stomp, stomp and stamp
Stomp and stamp together

Anything worth doing once
Is better done again
Anything worth doing alone
Is better with a friend

Jump, jump, jump the gate
Jump the gate together
Hop the fence that holds you in
Face your fate together

Run, run, run the race
Run the race together
Forget the gold, forget first place
Run the race together

Any road you’re starting down
Can lead you to an end
Any load you’re carrying alone
Is lighter with a friend

Stand, stand, take a stand
Take a stand together
Take a stand and make this land
Make it all the better

Dance, dance, clap and dance
Clap and dance together
This could be your only chance
So clap and dance together
Clap and dance together
Clap your hands together
Track Name: Hound Dog Song
Every time I come to town
The boys keep kicking my dog around
Makes no difference if he’s a hound
They gotta quit kicking my dog around

Me and Lem Briggs and old Bill Brown
Took a load of corn to town
That old Jim Dog, ornery old cuss
He just naturally followed us

As we drove past Johnson’s store
A passel of yaps come out the door
Jim he scooted behind a box
With all them fellas throwing rocks

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh…

They tied a can to old Jim’s tail
And run him past the county jail
That just naturally made us sore
Lem he cussed and Bill he swore

Me and Lem Briggs and old Bill Brown
Lost no time getting down
We wiped them fellas on the ground
For kicking my old dog Jim around

Jim seen his duty there and then
He lit into them gentlemen
He sure mussed up the courthouse square
With rags and meat and hide and hair

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh…

Every time I come to town
The boys keep kicking my dog around
Makes no difference if he’s a hound
They gotta quit kicking my dog around
Track Name: Fourth Day of July
Oh, the cuckoo is a pretty bird
She warbles as she flies
She never hollers “Cuckoo!”
Till the fourth day of July

And I see, and I see
On the fourth day of July

Oh, the cuckoo is an outlaw
She steals from the rest
She’ll rob that poor robin
Of the eggs in her nest

And I see, oh I see
On the fourth day of July

Gonna build me a little bird nest
Up in the oak tree so high
So I can spy that cuckoo
Each time she comes by

And I see, oh I see
On the fourth day of July

Oh, the cuckoo is a pretty bird
She warbles as she flies
She shoots like a firework
On the fourth of July

And I see, oh I see
On the fourth day of July
Track Name: Molly Cottontail
Oh, Molly Cottontail
At night when the moon is pale
You don’t have to turn your tail
Always give me leg bail

Molly in the bramble-brier
Let me get a little nigher
Prickly-pear, it stings like fire
Do please come pick out the brier

Molly in the pale moonlight
Your tail is sure a pretty white
You take it far way outta sight
Molly, Molly, Molly, Molly, Molly Bright

Oh Molly Cottontail
You sits up on a rotten rail
You tear right through that graveyard, hare
Make them ugly haunts all wail

Oh, Molly Cottontail,
Won’t you be sure not to fail
To give me your right hind foot, babe
My luck it won’t be for sale

Ain’t there somebody gonna dance with little Molly…

Everybody wiggle your cottontail…
Track Name: By the Light
By the light of the morning
A new sun was dawning
A rooster was crowing at me

I said, “Rooster, why you crowing
First thing in the morning
When some folks are trying to sleep?”

He said, “Man, why you snoozing?
Think of all the time you’re losing
Life you could be using for living free”

So I jumped out of bed
Breathed the air into my head
And tiptoed past the rest just dead asleep

I put my feet right to the road
Just to see where it was going
To learn what it might know about being me

And it led me to a white horse
A heaving breathing life force
He carried me through the quiet forest trees

And he led me to a river
That mighty life-giver
I jumped in with a shiver and a squeal

And I looked up to the sky
To the clouds rolling by
Saw the sunlight just shining for me

And I sang, “La la la la la…”

Track Name: Welcome to the World
Welcome to the world, welcome to the bright-eyed world
Welcome to the world, welcome to the wild-eyed world
It’s a weird and wondrous world, a weird and wondrous winding world
It’s a cold and callused world, a cold and callous kind of world

If I could take you in my arms and tell you that I’m going to
Keep you safe from harm, you know my boy I’d want to
But it’s a mean and mystic world and everybody’s going to
Find out on their own, you know my boy you got to
And I’m just looking for the words…

Welcome to the world, welcome to the glad-eyed world
Welcome to the world, welcome to sad-eyed world
It’s a jumping joyous world, a jumping joyful juggling world
It’s a jumbled jagged world, a jumbled jigsaw-puzzling world

But remember now and then, anytime you want to
Find your way back home, you need a place to run to
To feel the sky above, to feel the earth below you
You got this heart to love, you got these arms to hold you

And I’ll say, “Welcome to the world…”
Track Name: Sleepy Song
Are you done with your winking?
Are you done with your blinking?
Are you ready my sweet boy for sleeple?
Are you done with your blinks?
Tell me, what do you think?
You know that we’re all sleepy people

Are you done with the bright?
Are you done with the light?
Are you done with these daytime hijinkles?
Are you ready for night
And the stars shining bright
Up in the sky, twinkle, twinkle?

Are you done with the loudness
Of this party crowd?
Are you done with the mix and the mingle?
Are you ready to go?
Yeah, you’re telling me so
Are you ready for car keys to jingle?

La la la la la la…

Are you ready, my boy
For your brain to enjoy
A delicious cupcake with sprinkles?
You can find such sweet things
In your very own dreams
In your deep-sleeping cerebral wrinkles

Are you ready for sleep?
Cuz I’m reaching my brink
Can you go down like old Rip Van Winkle?
This has gone on too long
Man, you’re putting me on
You’re being a bleepy-bleep-bleeple

La la la la la la…

Could it really be true?
Is the fight finally through?
Have you sunk into sweet silent slumber?
Well I’m sinking too
Into the dark and deep blue
Goodnight friends, I’m going under

La la la la la la…
