Groundhog 02:22
Shoulder up your rope and whistle up your dog Shoulder up your rope and whistle up your dog We’re going to the woods to catch a groundhog Oh, groundhog! Two in a hole and one on a log Two in a hole and one on a log Two for my sugar baby, one for my dog Oh, groundhog! Chase em down children as fast as you can Chase em down children just as fast as you can She finds a little tunnel and shoots right in Oh, groundhog! Reach on in and grab her by the tail Reach on in and grab her by the tail Throw that groundhog in your lunch pail Oh, groundhog! How the little children all whooped and cried How the little children all whooped and cried They love that groundhog stewed and fried Oh groundhog! Eat up the meat and save the hide You eat up the meat and you save the hide Best darn shoestring ever was tied Oh, groundhog Gather round children, have a little dance Gather round children and have a little dance Careful not to dance a hole in your pants Oh, groundhog! Shoulder up your rope and whistle up your dog Shoulder up your rope and whistle up your dog We’re going back out for more groundhog Oh, groundhog! Oh, groundhog! Oh, groundhog!

Ain’t gonna rain Ain’t gonna snow Ain’t gonna rain no more Cheer up everybody for It ain’t gonna rain no more… Old cow died at the fork of the branch Ain’t gonna rain no more The buzzards had a public dance Ain’t gonna rain no more What did the Oak Tree say to the crow? Ain’t gonna rain no more Floods they come and floods they go Ain’t gonna rain no more Ain’t gonna rain… Rabbit ate my turnip top Ain’t gonna rain no more Off he ran with a hippity hop Ain’t gonna rain no more Rabbit read that rainbow sign Ain’t gonna rain no more No more water just fire next time Ain’t gonna rain no more Ain’t gonna rain…

Buckeye Jim 02:31
Way up yonder above the sky A bluebird lived in a jaybird’s eye Buckeye Jim, you can’t go Go weave and spin, you can’t go Buckeye Jim Way up yonder above the moon A bluejay nest in a silver spoon Buckeye Jim… Way down yonder in a wooden trough An old sow died of the whooping cough Buckeye Jim… Way down yonder in a hollow log A red bird danced with a green bullfrog Buckeye Jim… Way down yonder below the sky A baby shone in his daddy’s eye Buckeye Jim… Buckeye Jim, Buckeye Jim…

When I was just a little boy With green and blue eyes shining bright Looking for some fun, I grabbed my BB gun And snuck out of the house late one night I crept to the edge of my grandparents’ farm And crawled through that hole in the fence Started running through the trees Like an animal set free Bursting my every little sense I thought I heard somebody singing So I chased that faint sound through the night I stumbled and I fell and I tumbled down a hill Into the clearing where I saw the light A circle of torches was burning Round a tent made of Grandma’s old sheets By the light of the fire I saw an animal choir All raising their paws to the trees And all the critters stand up And put their hands up Then they sing the chorus Shouting, “Praise the Forest” Well they jumped and pranced And did that wild old dance At the Deep Woods Revival Deep Woods Revival A turtle was preaching the sermon A rabbit was leading the band All the sparrows and pigeons Hot with old time religion Were flapping their wings like paper fans A possum was pumping the organ A raccoon shook a tambourine A grizzled old bear just grumbled out a prayer The holiest thing I ever seen I stepped on a twig and they heard me A hundred wild eyes pierced my soul A noise escaped my lungs And they thought I was speaking tongues So they invited me into the fold And everybody stands up… Never in my life would I raise another rifle I felt so full of life At the Deep Woods Revival that night

Animal Fair 02:30
I went to the animal fair The birds and the beasts were there The old raccoon by the light of the moon Was combing his auburn hair My hound dog chased the skunk She sprayed him and man it stunk Which woke up the bear who went on a tear And chased us up the Oak Tree trunk The party went all night Scattered at the sun’s first light My granddaddy had to come and drag me away To make me go home Don’t make me go home This is best trip I’ve ever been on Cuz this is the wildest I ever have gone

Grizzly Bear 03:16
Gonna tell you little story about (grizzly bear) A scary little story about (grizzly bear) Be careful when you’re going out (grizzly bear) For the nefarious, notorious grizzly bear One day I went walking out Through the woods I was rambling round I was scrambling up and ambling down When I saw a great big grizzly, grizzly bear He was 10 foot tall He had razor sharp claws Blood was dripping from his jaws He was a great big grizzly, grizzly bear He was wobbling and squabbling Stomping and chomping Walking and talking bad He was a whoa-oh-oh-oh grizzly bear Great big grizzly, grizzly bear Great big grizzly, grizzly bear Great big grizzly, grizzly bear Great big grizzly, grizzly bear I tried to hide but he spied me In a flash he was beside me Well, he looked me in the eyes He said, “You better say goodbye, boy” I was frozen in my tracks I started slowly creeping back I spun and tore off in a flash With him racing and chasing me, grizzly bear Great big grizzly, grizzly bear… If you see the great bear coming You best be swiftly running Climb a tree, in your pants you’ll pee But just let him be… Whoa-oh-oh-oh grizzly bear!

The Bullfrog 03:14
Well, my bullfrog jumped In the middle of the spring I ain’t gonna weep no more I held him tight but he slipped my cling I ain’t gonna weep no more So I went fishing at the catfish hole I ain’t gonna weep no more But the catfish snapped and he broke my pole I ain’t gonna weep no more Fare thee well, my children I’ll join that heavenly band Where there ain’t any weeping any more Fare thee well, my children I’ll join that heavenly band Where there ain’t any weeping any more La la la la la la la la la la I ain’t gonna weep no more… Well, my grandpa died when I was nine I ached and I weeped and moaned My heart was heavy while the sun did shine But I ached and I weeped and moaned When the bullfrog jumps In the middle of the spring I ain’t gonna weep no more Just let him go, smile and sing “I ain’t gonna weep no more” Fare thee well, my children…

about

'Deep Woods Revival' is Red Yarn's second album, the follow-up (and prequel) to his 2013 debut album, 'The Deep Woods.' He delves deeper into the American folk canon, weaving an original narrative and lyrics into traditional animal folksongs. The album is divided into two parts: tracks 1-8 are "For Everyone" while tracks 9-14 are "For Brave Kids & Grown-Ups."

Recorded at Type Foundry Studios with renowned producer Adam Selzer, a band of local luminaries, and a choir of friends, Deep Woods Revival is a lush and lively folk-rock song cycle about childhood freedom and discovery in the wilderness.
