Old Barn 04:22
Well I’m goin out tonight neath the stars' silver light I’m callin all the critters on the farm Well we all been feelin blue and there’s just one thing to do We’re gonna throw a party in the barn My turkey in the straw has lost his haw-haw-haw And I wish someone would throw my dog a bone All my rooster used to do was cock-a-doodle-doo But lately it’s all cock-a-doodle-don’t It don’t matter whether you got fur or you got feathers If you walk on four legs or on two Well we’ll all feel better if we could all just be together And there’s room here in my old barn for you The pot-bellied pig has got his mask and wig He’s dressin up in costume for the ball And the cat has brought her fiddle and she’s playin “Hey Diddle Diddle” And the cow’s over the moon so don’t you let her fall The ducks and the chickens are cluckin with the guitar pickin And the horse of course supports your choice to sing till you’re hoarse or joyfully cut a rug Have you met Miss Wooly Sheep? She’s good company to keep If you been stuck out in the cold and you need a hug It don’t matter whether you got fine or fearsome weather If your skies are gray or if your skies are blue Well we’ll all feel better if we could all just be together And there’s room here in my old barn for you The new sheriff from the town just tried to shut us down Sayin who could stay and who must leave Aw but if you’re asking me, well the only place to be Is wherever with whomever you feel free So it don’t matter whether you’ve been tarred and feathered If you got everything or nothing left to lose Well we’ll all feel better if we could all just be together And there’s room here in my old barn for you Oh-oh, we got room here in our old barn for you, yes we do

Well you can’t hurt a friend when there’s a party goin on, oh no! Down in the meadow, in the middle of the meadow In the middle of the meadow there’s a party goin on Down in the meadow, in the middle of the meadow A mousie and a cat are gettin famously along Dance, dance, dance everybody Dance everybody in the middle of the meadow Dance, dance, dance everybody Dance everybody, there’s a party goin on

Well I finally got a job last Monday I hadn't worked in a month of Sundays And everything was gettin hungry But everything's all right now So gather round all you children Gather round all you children Gather round all you children I'm gonna feed you now Well my horses were gettin skinny I'd have fed em if I’d had any But I didn't even have a penny But everything's all right now So gather round all you children... Well the hogs had started gruntin And the hound dog started huntin And boys that's really somethin But everything’s alright now Well the hens all stopped a-layin And the baby chicks started strayin And the rooster was even prayin But everything’s alright now So gather round all you children... Well I finally got a job last Monday I hadn't worked in a month of Sundays And everything was gettin hungry But everything's all right now So gather round all you children...

Early June morning back in ‘95 I’d been countin the days till the summertime When Daddy had promised that he’d teach me to drive The little green Gator in the barn outside Sittin side by side in the bucket seat I pulled the choke and I turned the key Just a little green and yellow ATV But when she coughed to life, oh it set me free Go little Gator, little Gator go Speedin down that gravel road Sweet dump feature on the cargo box For haulin cedar and movin rocks Drivin down alone to Gopher’s Gulch Choppin with a chainsaw and shovelin mulch Go little Gator, little Gator go See y’all later, I’m on my own July evening at a long day’s end I was speedin round a washed out bend Hit a pothole and lost control I got thrown and my Gator rolled Cut and bruised on the side of my head Grounded for the summer and my Gator’s dead Never seen my dad so mad I lost the best thing that I ever had Just last week I was back at the farm Cleanin up the junkpile behind the barn Pulled back a tarp and what do I see But a busted up and rusted out UTV Pushed her round into the shop Tinkered with the engine till I had to stop Pulled the choke and turned the key My little green Gator coughed to life for me Go little Gator, little Gator go Accelerator, soothe my soul Go little Gator, little Gator go Take me back to the summer I was 12 years old Closest thing to freedom that I ever knowed Was speedin down that gravel road

Barnfire 03:19
Last night I had the strangest dream Believed I could fix most everything So I called up my good friends Said, “Come down right away” Turned out to be a big mistake Things started off okay Everyone was dancin, feelin great All it took was an angry word Then the good times lost their hold That’s when we lost control Bill started kickin his hind legs His hoof nearly caught Jim Dog in the head Jim barked and bore his teeth At the hepcat by his side You can bet the mice got terrorized With rodents skitterin around Pig lost his foothold and fell down Smack dab on rooster Who crowed in goose’s ear Goose started flappin round in fear Sheep were creepin backward Knocked a candle on a bale of wool The sparks surprised the cow Who jumped and bumped into the bull Bull he rammed the rubble pile Old boards and rubber tires And now the barn’s on fire Get out, the barn’s on fire Help the cat down from the hayloft Free the horse from the barbed wire Good lord, the barn’s on fire Good lord, the barn’s on fire You don’t know the good in someone’s heart Till the situation’s dire Like when the barn caught fire

There’s a farm on the range All the folks call it strange They say the farmer’s as odd as can be He just woke up one day And he opened the gate And he set all the animals free Singin “Go on, my friends My goats, sheep and hens The wild world is now yours to roam As you’re movin along I’ll be singin this song I’ll keep singin till the cows come home” Well they all were surprised With the pace of life on the outside How the cars honked and the people did stare But they all made their way Gettin by, makin hay Some went boldly and some were plain scared Well the pig got a gig Doin kids' birthdays in a wig Cow's the mascot for a hamburger stand And the sheep found another farm They earned their keep spinnin yarns And the chickens laid eggs on command Singin "Keep it up friends Makin ends meet till the end The world isn't kind but it's your own If you ever get lost Perk your ears up for this song We'll keep singin till the cows come home" The farmer walked out one day There they stood at his gate The sheep were shiverin, shorn down to their skins The old bull had a brand new brand The chickens all wore ankle bands The shoeless horse stumbled in with a limp He sang "Welcome home friends My goats, sheep and hens You know you were never alone As you were out on your own I was singin this song I kept singin till the cows came home I kept singin till the cows came home"

In the ashes of a fire in our town Where the trash had piled up and blown around Kindled memories of a place that used to be In the ashes, pickin trash up, you and me On a road that ran away from all we knew Yellow lines pulled up toward skies so bright and blue No matter how far out we drove, how fast we flew Turnin right back to our home was me and you Where our mama sang her daddy’s favorite hymns While she searched on the piano for the chords she learned from him And a thought waltzed through my mind just like an old forgotten song With my grandma and my grandpa and everybody singin along It takes a spark, child, to face the darkest night It takes some darkness to make the fire shine bright It takes a bonfire to keep a village warm It takes a village to raise a barn All our neighbors brought their lumber scraps and tools Many hands make lighter work they proved the rule Everyone chipped in and soon our barn was done Slapped some red paint on and picked back up the fun Horse and dog shook hoof and paw and made amends Cat and mouse quit playin games and now they’re friends Like the dickens all the chickens came home to roost But that’s a good thing when your rooster needs a boost And our mamas lead the crowd in old church hymns While we draw buckets from the well of all the love we learned from them And all the places we were goin and all the people we have been Are singin right along to that old forgotten hymn It takes a spark, child, to face the darkest night It takes some darkness to make the fire shine bright It takes a barnfire to teach a village to get along It takes a village to raise a barn It takes a village to raise a barn

In case you missed the gist of my invitation If I seem a bit unzipped, be patient You can all come to my party, yeah here’s hopin Cuz like my daddy always said My barn door is open Yeah my daddy always said my barn door was open And I think he meant to give me tools for copin With the fools at middle school who laughed because my fly was broken We made amends, yeah I made some friends My barn door was open May we all let all our barn doors remain open And cut out all the muckin up and mopin Please let in some friends to mend the parts you feel are broken Unlock your heart and start to let your barn doors open Unlock your heart and live with your barn doors wide open

about

'Red Yarn's Old Barn' is the fifth album by Austin-born, Portland-based family musician Red Yarn (aka Andy Furgeson). With originals, traditionals & a classic country cover song reflecting Furgeson's roots in the Texas Hill Country, 'Red Yarn's Old Barn' tells of an epic barndance where critters of all kinds are welcome.

Furgeson co-produced the album with GRAMMY-winner Dean Jones & renowned engineer Adam Selzer, with studio sessions in Portland, Austin & the Hudson Valley. Furgeson & his wife Jessie Eller-Isaacs are backed by a stellar band featuring Jones, Dan Hunt (Neko Case), Annalisa Tornfelt (Black Prairie, Rhett Miller) & Paul Brainard (M. Ward, Richmond Fontaine), with special guests like Jenny Conlee (the Decemberists), Justin Lansing (the Okee Dokee Brothers) & Jazzy Ash.

Red Yarn's playful & personal country-rock songs paint the Old Barn as an inclusive microcosm of the USA. "We'll all feel better if we could all just be together," Red sings on the opening track, "and there's room here in my Old Barn for you."
