about

Adapted by Red Yarn from the traditional “Buck-Eye Rabbit,” as sung by E. H. Pillans and collected by Byron Arnold. I found the song in Alan Lomax’ 'Folk Songs of North America' (1960).

lyrics

I wanted sugar very much
I went to sugar town
I climbed up in that sugar tree
And I shook that sugar down

Buckeye rabbit, shoo-da
(No more shoo rab)
Buckeye rabbit, shoo rab
(No more blue rabbit)
Buckeye rabbit shoo shoo shoo
(No more shoo shoo shoo)
No more cruel rabbit jokes on you
(Once you tasted that sugar
Only sugar would do)
