about

Written by Andy Furgeson/Red Yarn in 2016. Includes traditional English nursery rhymes “Goosey Goosey Gander,” “Hey Diddle Diddle,” and “All Around the Mulberry Bush,” and references the traditional folksong “Old Lady Goose,” as published in Ruth Crawford Seeger’s 'Animal Folk Songs for Children' (1950).

lyrics

Old Mother Goose, she busted loose
She flew the coop, man, she slipped the noose
Now Old Mother Goose, she cutting loose
Say hello to the new Old Mother Goose, Goose, Goose

That Old Mother Goose is gone
She been locked up for far too long
Stuck in the nursery, cooped up in the barn
Trapped with the babies on Old MacDonald’s Farm
So she picked the lock, she jumped the gate
She spreading her wings and she shifting her fate
Now Old Mother Goose is moving along
Just strutting her stuff and singing her song

It goes, Old Mother Goose…

Goosey, goosey gander, whither shall I wander
Upstairs, downstairs, in my lady’s chamber
There I met an old man who wouldn’t say his prayers
So I bit him in the left leg and I kicked him down the stairs

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon

All around the mulberry bush
The monkey chased the weasel
The monkey thought it was all in good fun
But then, “POP!” goes the weasel

Mothers and fathers: you do not understand her
What’s good for this goose ain’t no good for your gander
Whatever the season, her weather is fine, man
Whatever the reason, she’s got a rhyme

Old Mother Goose…
