Did you ever hear a critter in your crawlspace making sounds? A varmint in your vent shaft just banging all around? If you got some noisy dwellers in your cellar you may have found The best new rock’n’roll band rising up from the underground We are rodents, moles and rabbits who have learned to play guitars Gophers, voles and groundhogs… future superstars Some people call us dirty but from the dirt’s just who we are So ignore our rowdy racket as we rehearse our repertoire Now there are critters digging tunnels from all across the land They are crowding in your basement, stomping feet and clapping hands All you people up above us just don’t understand We’re the subterranean, animalian Basement Burrow Band Yeah we’re the subterranean, animalian Basement Burrow Band We are blasting out the speakers with our pest-infested song All the squeaky backup squeakers are squeaking right along You can put away the rat traps, hang up the telephone Call off the exterminator cuz we have made ourselves at home Now there are critters digging tunnels from all across the land They are crowding in your basement, stomping feet and clapping hands All you people up above us, you just don’t understand We’re the subterranean, animalian Basement Burrow Band Yeah we’re the subterranean, animalian Basement Burrow Band Yeah we’re the subterranean, animalian We’re bathing daily in what you flush down the drain Yeah we’re the subterranean, animalian Basement Burrow Band

Sewer Party 02:40
Tonight the rats are putting on a show At the place where all the outcasts go Bring your earplugs for the music And your nose-clamps for the sewage It’s a sewer party About to get started So don’t you be tardy To the sewer party All the pests are coming out tonight The arthropods are always first in line Snakes are hanging from the ceiling The roaches bring the social feeling It’s a sewer party You better be hardy It’s getting kinda gnarly At the sewer party There’s a turtle on a surfboard doing tricks Spiders spinning, frogs all jump and flip Salamanders in the puddles Swimming round the stinky bubbles At the sewer party A gutter safari Don’t eat the calamari At the sewer party, sewer party, ow! You can smell this shindig from a mile away We’ll be clogging up your pipes till the break of day So please just wait to flush the toilet We’re having fun, no need to spoil it At the sewer party Tell the plumber we’re sorry He’ll need a roto-rooter army After the sewer party, sewer party Yeah the sewer party Gets a little sloppy But we ain’t hurtin nobody At the sewer party, sewer party

Dig It 02:54
In this big world There’s many creatures Stick to the surface It’s just their nature Then there’s the diggers The deeper seekers The earth’s their teacher, the search is richer For all the dreamers You dig it? You dig it? You dig it? We dig it Delver the DJ Has got a record collection Knows every b-side, read every liner note Makes every connection Becky the Bookworm She’s so well read She’s got libraries, literary dictionaries Inside her head And Gus the Guru Some people say he’s much too woo-woo He’s digging straight up to the astral plane With a beautiful brain to maintain such a worldview They dig it They dig it They dig it You dig it? We are the diggers And we’re seeking our meaning Dipping our dippers In the pot of of our dreaming Sharing the pleasures Of whatever we found We know the most precious treasure’s Waiting underground We dig it

Aw Rats! 02:07
Aw rats! Aw rats! Aw rats in the city, rats on the street Rats on the sidewalk scuttling under feet Rats getting smarter, rats acting strange Rats in the subway, busking for change Rats playing music? How can this be? Aw rats, these rats got a better band than me! Aw rats! Aw rats! Aw rats on the corner, rats on the block Rats in the neighborhood, blaring punk rock Rats at the record store, rats at the bar Rats at the music shop, trying out guitars Rats drive me crazy with their ratty sounds Aw rats these rats are taking over town Aw rats! Aw rats! Aw rats in the woodshed, rats in my garage I walked in on their band practice... this is a mirage! Rats in the attic, rats in the vents I got rats as my roommates but they ain’t paying rent Rats with their houseguests... are they all in the band? Aw rats, these rats are loading up my van Aw rats! Aw rats! And now there’s rats sitting shotgun, rats on the road Rats just convinced me to drive them to the show Rats in the parking lot, rats loading gear Rats in the green room drinking ratty beer Rats doing soundcheck, rats on the stage Rats start rocking and rats are all the rage Everybody’s jumping, everybody yells Lots of fist pumping, lots of funny smells Now the rats are thanking all their ratty fans The rats gave me a shout-out for helping out the band The crowd is all clapping and screaming for more I think the rats are gonna do a double encore! I’m about to stage dive! Is this really happening?!? Now I’m crowd surfing on a hundred crazy rat fans! Aw rats! Aw rats! Aw rats! Aw rats! Yeah rats!

Uncle Rat was 98 years old He survived a dozen catfights And a thousand nights of the bitter cold But on that fateful evening A couple years ago He traveled home We were all up in the attic For a party till the dawn Toasting Maggie’s wedding And singing old Rodential songs Uncle Rat stumbled off To pour another draft When we heard the snap The night we laid down Uncle Rat All the cousins remember that We lit up all the candles and we pried open the trap The night we laid down Uncle Rat We remember that Patrick Rat was a mighty man From the old country His full-throated Irish tenor Gave the cats all the shaky knees And every year his Christmas gift For each nephew and niece Was a chunk of cheesy Sweet stinky cheese Uncle Rat lives on in our memories We sing his favorite drinking songs And tell his epic war stories And each September 28th We hold an attic wake For Patty’s sake The night we laid down Uncle Rat All the cousins remember that We light up all the candles and curse the cats and traps The night we laid down Uncle Rat We remember that

Diggin' Down 02:50
We are diggin, diggin down Puttin roots deep in the ground Buried treasure we have found down below With our hope to light the way We go deeper every day Plantin seeds down in the clay, we’re diggin down Like the mole who cannot see Where his little hole will lead Hunkers down underground and gets to work We are diggin for the other side Some with vision, some still blind Imagination is the guide, we’re diggin down Like the groundhog in her den She prepared for all her kin To keep them from the winter wind and falling rain She has built a cozy home Where her little ones can grow She will teach them all she knows of diggin down [Chorus] Like the squirrel before the cold Storin acorns in a hole Makin plans before the snow gets in the way He is thinkin of next season He’ll be feastin instead of freezin Mother nature is the reason, diggin down Like the rabbit in her warren All the paths she is explorin Every twist and every turn can open .. doors To a sunny, brighter future To a lush and greener pasture Were our needs will all be nurtured, diggin down We are diggin, diggin down While the earth keeps spinning round We get closer to the center every day When we reach that hallowed ground Peace and justice will be found We will celebrate and sing and we will say [Chorus]

about

'The Underground EP' is a new collection of punk, grunge, folk & dance jams written by Red Yarn (aka Andy Furgeson) during the pandemic. As Furgeson was hunkered down at home with his family in Portland, OR, he dug into his imagination & his basement studio to create a batch of songs about outcast subterranean animals. He traded tracks back and forth with co-producer Dean Jones at No Parking Studio in Rosendale, NY, and recorded more layers with Portland engineer Adam Selzer. He invited Washington, DC "drumcussionist" Uncle Devin to guest on a track, while Yarn family-members Miss Jessie & Lewis lent their vocals too. Longtime collaborator Ryan Bruce designed the wild, colorful cover art. In keeping with the "underground" vibe, Red Yarn is first releasing the EP exclusively to his Patreon supporters, then sharing it on Bandcamp, then planning a wider release on Groundhog Day 2022. Dig in!
